La remota isla británica de Santa Elena

Una de las islas más remotas del mundo, Santa Elena, hasta ahora solo accesible en barco y conocida por ser el lugar donde murió Napoleón Bonaparte, recibió su primer vuelo comercial, operado por la aerolínea sudafricana Airlink.

En medio del océano Atlántico, a unos 1.800 kilómetros de la costa de Angola y 4.000 de Río de Janeiro, esta pequeña isla perteneciente a Reino Unido estaba hasta ahora comunicada por un buque que la visitaba una vez cada tres semanas.

Airlink dispondrá de un vuelo semanal, cada sábado, desde Johannesburgo y Ciudad del Cabo, con escala en Windhoek (Namibia), con precios que oscilarán entre los 904 y los 1.783 euros.

Este primer vuelo supone la inauguración del aeropuerto internacional de la isla, considerado por los medios británicos como 'el más inútil del mundo', en parte debido a su coste, de unos 320 millones de euros.

En la página promocional de la recién inaugurada línea, Airlink asegura que Santa Elena es un destino ideal por su 'abundancia de flora y fauna', y destaca la 'oportunidad de nadar con tiburones ballena' y la posibilidad de inmersión 'en el capítulo final de Napoleón que ofrece este paraíso subtropical'.

La isla y sus cerca de 4.500 habitantes son parte del territorio de ultramar británico de Santa Elena, Ascensión y Tristán de Acuña, siendo este último el archipiélago habitado más remoto del mundo, a unos 2.450 kilómetros al sur de Santa Elena.

Precisamente a la isla de Ascensión, situada a unos 1.300 kilómetros al noroeste de Santa Elena, Airlink ofrecerá un vuelo mensual a partir del tercer fin de semana de noviembre.
